Water for Emergency Use in an Emergency: Water Bob, Filters and More. Shortlink http://theyshallwalk.org/?p=1523
In March 2012 Stacy and I (Monty) had been researching shelf stable foods and water treatment for our church, home and community. We have always had water filters at home to take out chemicals and impurities. Camping we have used filter straws, bucket filters, bag filters and bottle filters. In an emergency setting we have a combination of all of them for the “Get Home bag”, “Bug Out bag”, “Home Food and Supply Storage”, and the “Cache Sites”. (Check back at the Food Life blog category for other articles about each of these. You can also search the web for information about it. ) Doomsday Preppers show is a great resource for learning more about water and other essentials for preparing for emergency.
At a show in May we met two people withing two hours that were wanting to buy a Water Bob to prepare for an emergency by storing a bathtub of water that they could keep clean. If you have never seen the Water Bob you can check it out at http://www.waterbob.com/Welcome.do;jsessionid=A7FD96505B093D295068376CB04334EE follow this other link to order from Dan at Hurricane Preppers 1-877-760-3773
The factory had run out of the Water Bob product and several people wanted them now. After making several phone calls and checking the web there were a lot of websites offering to take orders and ship them when they come. The people told me they had seen the pricing from $25 up to $75 for the Water Bob. I found a site that has them for $39 and currently on sale for $33.99. Dan at Huricane Prepper will only sell one to each person because he wants to be fair to all customers.
In addition to the Water Bob there are other concerns. The Water Bob is great if you are aware there is an emergency coming and you have time to fill it before the water is contaminated or is cut off. If the water is contaminated you will need to clean it. You can clean the water by boiling if you have heat, filtering or purifying the water and then storing it in your Water Bob.
If the water is contaminated or cut off you will need to consider the other options. You could get an extra bathtub that someone is tossing
out or getting rid of and place that tub in your storage shed, garage or basement and pre fill it. If you do this you will need to be sure there is drainage because the Water Bob is only rated to keep the water safe for four weeks.
After that time you will start to see stuff growing in it. The options are to drain it every 3 weeks or treat the water and keep it cool and out of sunlight. If you are going to use the Water Bob for long term storage you will want to consider the Bucket filter that can do one million gallons of water. After filtering the water into your Water Bob you will want to treat it with “stabilized chlorine dioxide” that is a more effective germicide than iodine or for smaller amounts of water up to 60 gallons Aquamira water treatment drops
Other treatment options include a filter straw that you may want to consider for all locations: Home, work, car, bug out bags, get home bags, church, school and cache sites.
